This body of work focuses on local Canadian wildlife, landscape and the small details and beings in between. I hope to promote thoughts around respect, concern, action and local conservation towards the environment and creatures that surround us. These paintings provide a visual emphasis on the importance of bees and the landscape that supports them such as meadows, trees, new forest growth, as well as local individual fruits and flowers. My encaustic paintings are created from my own reference photos that I take during hikes. I am interested in focusing on smaller parts of the landscape that may be passed by and using my memory and experience of the location to guide the intentions and feel of each piece.
Encaustic paint is an ancient painting medium made of beeswax and damar resin crystals. I fell in love with encaustic painting because it offers a distinct luminosity, semi-gloss finish, and sense of depth that is unique to the medium. I'm also a beekeeper and have my own hives, so I have a strong connection to the greater process involved in encaustic painting. I use some of the wax from my hives, and the rest from local apiarists! All of my paintings are on cradled birch panels. Please email me to inquire about purchasing or view my available paintings tab!
