This body of work focuses on double meanings and comparisons. These paintings are an investigation into the delicate and innocent side that people and nature have in common. There is a central theme of balance and fragility within the landscape of both a person and a scene. Mental health and the health of a landscape are constantly in growth, down fall, recovery and progression. Just as mental health can slide back and forth, or tip over, I build my “stick still life” paintings to resemble a barely balancing landscape of mountains and hills with rivers as the shadows. Even though I see the balance in nature and the mind as being delicate, I mostly see it as being incredibly strong and able. The shadow or river, is one of the essential places in each scene since it provides me with the ability to appreciate the light. It gives me sustenance and ongoing strength both mentally and physically. These paintings are partly self portrait, part reflection, part observation. Value and darkness lets you see the light and its true form. When we overcome hardship we are usually stronger afterwards and for that I see great value in shadows. Throughout all of my painting, I hope to promote thoughts around respect, concern, and kindness towards the fragile environment that surrounds us and also which lives inside of us.
Encaustic paint is an ancient painting medium made of beeswax and damar resin crystals. I fell in love with encaustic painting because it offers a distinct luminosity, semi-gloss finish, and sense of depth that is unique to the medium. I'm also a beekeeper and have my own hives, so I have a strong connection to the greater process involved in encaustic painting. I use some of the wax from my hives, and the rest from local apiarists! All of my paintings are on cradled birch panels, and most are framed in wood. Please email me to inquire about purchasing.
